Born in Bedford on 10th November 1879 [Bedford 3b:348], one of 9 children of Benjamin and Elizabeth STRANGWARD (née MOORE).

1881 census...George [3] was at 22 All Hallows Lane, Bedford with his father Benjamin [40], a publican born Cambridge; his mother Elizabeth [34] born London; brothers Henry [15]; Benjamin [10] and Thomas [5], and sisters Sarah [15]; Elizabeth [12]; Susan [7] and Caroline [1]. All the children were born in Bedford.

1891 census...so far not found, but they were transcribed by Find my Past in 1881 census as Sangered.

1901 census...George [22] a labourer, was boarding with Arthur & Caroline NUDD (Caroline was his sister) at the Duddery (part of the Rookery), Newmarket.
George married Berth Rosina GRAY at St Giles, London in Q3-1910.

1911 census...George [33] a fish fryer, was living in Market Street, Newmarket, with his wife Bertha [32] born Cambridge and his sons Benjamin [6] born Lambeth, London, George [4] and Arthur [2] both born Newmarket.

They had a daughter (Bertha) in 1915 in Newmarket, who died the same year (grave New Ground J145). George enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.

As R.F.A. were attached to so many units, it is hard to see where George was killed. On this day, the 2nd of the Kaiserschlacht ( The German Spring Offensive) 111 RFA men were killed as the Germans over-ran many Britsh positions. 7 of George's 93rd Brigade died, but he was the only one from C Battery.



No known grave - George is commemorated on the Pozières Memorial, France- Ref:panels 7-10
